Industrial Flooring – Repair

Industries plays great role in the development of a nation by triggering the economic growth, national income and promotes living standard of people. Industry is the work area which involves in collecting raw materials, storing, working it, making them into finished products, packing, storing, distributing, etc. This raises need for a high quality flooring that can withstand the general wear and tear that comes with being in a busy industrial environment, but also for health and safety. To accommodate all these, the flooring shall be able to sustainable and durable for long time.

Industrial floors in Aircrafts Hanger, Beverages manufacturing & packing, Chemical manufacturing, Cold storage / Freezer rooms, Electronic assembly, Heavy Engineering, Machine shop, Warehouse, Workshops, etc., commonly experience problems due to design, construction and usage errors.

Here are some of the regular industrial problems with solution to repair them by ARDEX ENDURA:

Cracks: Cracks commonly occur due to settlement of base, vibration of the structure or insufficient detailing of the movement/construction joints. Static cracks shall be cleaned and filled using EP 320, concrete crack repair epoxy, Solvent-free, Low Viscosity Epoxy Resin.



Damaged control / contraction joints: 


Control/contraction joints are provided in large sized floor area to accommodate the movement of the slab. Forklift movement across the joint shoulders tend to chip of any small imperfections. These areas tend to become wider & deeper rapidly and become a potential risk. Failed joints allow liquid contaminants and dust to accumulate and reach the concrete matrix increasing the risk of floor deterioration.  Hence joint treatment should be addressed quickly to prevent increased repairs. Edge can be repaired using A 45, Rapid Drying and Hardening Internal Repair Mortar and joint gap shall be filled using SU 10, single component flexible PU sealant or by R 50 CP, 2K urethane.

Crazing, Curling, Spalling, potholes:


Probably the single most common reason for early cracks in concrete is plastic shrinkage. Heavy weights, and dropped objects can damage the concrete floor by causing cracks to chip off and create potholes. Area with these problems, shall be removed in defined pattern and refilled using B 35, structural grade polymer modified cementitious repair mortar by applying E 135, SBR bonding agent / E 125, acrylic bonding agent / EP 300, epoxy bonding agent.

Oil contaminated floor: When oil and grease spilled over the floor, concrete absorbs it and will be difficult to remove it completely. At this stage, we cannot put further coatings or flooring products on it. We need to remove the contaminated part and re-profile it with B 35, structural grade repair mortar. If floor is contaminated at large area. Then it is best to use A 37, Rapid usable engineering screed cum cementitious screed. This screed can also be used to level the floor difference undulated from 15-40mm. Engineering screed can be installed as bonded or un-bonded screed.

Dusty floor: Floor which low surface tensile strength, tends to give the top surface as dust causing difficult and un-hygienic working area for workers. This kind of dusty floor can be brought back to good industrial floor by ARDEX PC 50, Lithium based densifier or WPM 200, water based epoxy sealer.


Minor undulated floor:

It is obvious, that storage area with racks of 6-9 rows in column, need the floor to level so that the vehicle can move and reach the full height of the racks. To level the floor, it is best to use cementitious self-levelling compound like: CL 11, K 80 or K 301.

Industrial floor needs to be designed and constructed to ensure that repairing jobs does not occur. ARDEX ENDURA provides the following products for different requirements:

  5. Easily cleanable Industrial Epoxy Flooring: R 25 CE, Epoxy Self Leveling / Epoxy flooring topping.
  6. Rapid cure flooring: R 70 CP, medium duty polyurethane flooring.
